LOVE Spay (Laparoscopic Ovariectomy)

VetOvation would like to thank Brian Evans, DVM from Coastal Animal Hospital for being one of the pioneers in the LOVE spay movement.

What is Laparoscopy?

Minimally invasive surgery or laparoscopy (scope in the abdomen) is a way to explore the organs of your pet’s abdomen using only tiny key-hole incisions. Using these incisions 5mm (about 0.2 in) in diameter, we can insert a camera and our surgical instruments to perform surgery. This technology has been the standard of care in human medicine for the past 20 years. Laparoscopy is a safer surgery method because everything done is under direct magnified visualization. Organs, such as your pet’s ovaries, do not need to be ripped and torn allowing the surgery to be performed so there is less trauma to the internal structures of your pet’s abdomen. Recent studies have shown the use of laparoscopy to be 65% less traumatic and less painful compared to a traditional procedure, such as a spay.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the LOVE Spay?

The LOVE (Laparoscopic Ovariectomy) Spay is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes the ovaries from female pets through small incisions. Unlike traditional spaying, which involves a larger incision to remove both the ovaries and the uterus, the LOVE Spay focuses solely on the ovaries. This technique results in less tissue trauma, reduced pain, and a quicker recovery for the pet. The procedure uses specialized laparoscopic equipment, which allows for precise and controlled surgery with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.

How does LOVE Spay differ from traditional spaying methods?

The primary difference between LOVE Spay and traditional spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is the extent of the surgery and the invasiveness of the procedure:

  • Incision Size: LOVE Spay uses smaller incisions, typically around 5-10mm, compared to the larger incision required for traditional spaying.
  • Procedure Focus: LOVE Spay removes only the ovaries, while traditional spaying involves the removal of both the ovaries and the uterus.
  • Recovery and Pain: Due to the minimally invasive nature of LOVE Spay, pets experience less postoperative pain, reduced risk of complications, and a faster recovery time. Traditional spaying often involves more discomfort and a longer healing period.
  • Scarring: The smaller incisions in LOVE Spay result in minimal scarring, making it a cosmetically favorable option for pet owners.

What equipment is needed for the LOVE Spay procedure?

The LOVE Spay procedure requires specialized laparoscopic equipment, which includes:

  1. Laparoscope: A long, thin tube with a high-resolution camera and light source, used to visualize the internal structures of the abdomen.
  2. Trocar and Cannula System: Devices used to create and maintain access ports in the abdominal cavity for the insertion of instruments.
  3. Insufflation Device: Used to gently inflate the abdomen with gas (usually CO2), creating space for the surgeon to work.
  4. Laparoscopic Instruments: Specialized tools such as graspers, scissors, and electrocautery devices designed for precise manipulation and cutting of tissues.
  5. Endoscopic Viewing Monitor: Displays the high-definition images captured by the laparoscope, allowing the surgeon to see the surgical area in detail.

At VetOvation, we provide a complete range of laparoscopic equipment tailored for the LOVE Spay, including both purchase and rental options. We also offer training on the proper use and maintenance of this equipment.
